Remote Detection of Surge-Related Glacier Terminus Change across High Mountain Asia

چکیده
High Mountain Asia (HMA) hosts the largest glacier concentration outside of polar regions. It is also distinct glaciologically as it forms one two major surge clusters globally, and many glaciers there contradict globally observed recession trend. Surging are critical to our understanding HMA dynamics, threshold behaviour flow instability, hence have been subject extensive research, yet dynamical uncertainties remain. Using cloud-based geospatial data platform, Google Earth Engine (GEE) GEE-developed tool, GEEDiT, identify quantify trends in distribution phenomenological characteristics surging synoptically across HMA, we identified 137 between 1987–2019. Of these, 55 were newly identified, 15 underwent repeat surges, 18 with enhanced glaciological hazard potential, most notably from Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). Terminus position time series analysis 1987–2019 facilitated development a six-part classification behaviour, well quantification variables including active phase duration, terminus advance distance rate, periodicity. This research demonstrates application remote sensing techniques GEE platform develop phenomenology large areas, their ability highlight potential geohazard locations, which can subsequently be used focus monitoring efforts.

Glacier shrinkage across High Mountain Asia
An assessment of glacier shrinkage (reduction of area) for all of HighMountain Asia requires a complete compilation of measured rates of change and also a methodology for objective comparison of rates. I present a compilation from 155 publications reporting glacier area changes, and also a methodology that overcomes the main obstacles hindering comparison. Glacier areas are not always assigned ...
متن کاملGlacier surge mechanism: 1982-1983 surge of variegated glacier, alaska.
The hundredfold speedup in glacier motion in a surge of the kind the kind that took place in Variegated Glacier in 1982-1983 is caused by the buildup of high water pressure in the basal passageway system, which is made possible by a fundamental and pervasive change in the geometry and water-transport characteristics of this system. The behavior of the glacier in surge has many remarkable featur...
متن کاملA spatially resolved estimate of High Mountain Asia glacier mass balances, 2000-2016
High Mountain Asia hosts the largest glacier concentration outside the polar regions. These glaciers are important contributors to streamflow in one of the most populated areas of the world. Past studies have used methods that can only provide regionally-averaged glacier mass balances to assess the High Mountain Asia glacier contribution to rivers and sea level rise. Here we compute the mass ba...
متن کاملRemote sensing of glacier- and permafrost-related hazards in high mountains: an overview
Process interactions and chain reactions, the present shift of cryospheric hazard zones due to atmospheric warming, and the potential far reach of glacier disasters make it necessary to apply modern remote sensing techniques for the assessment of glacier and permafrost hazards in highmountains. Typically, related hazard source areas are situated in remote regions, often difficult to access for ...
متن کاملAutomated Change Detection from High-resolution Remote Sensing Images
A fast detection of change in areas of crises or catastrophes is an important condition for planning and coordination of help. This paper describes the results of a cooperative suite of algorithms for automated change detection based on the availability of new satellites with high temporal and/or spatial resolutions. The methods are based on frequency and texture analysis, and segmentation. For...
